Quitting is a deadly choice.
On Tuesday 27 May, we gathered with Community in the park beside our Caboolture clinics to shine a light on World No Tobacco Day.
Celebrated on Saturday 31 May, World No Tobacco Day focusses on the dangers of using tobacco and what choices Mob can make for healthy living, and to protect our future generations.
Community members came from far and wide to learn more about the quit journey, interact with the Quit display (Clem’s phlegm jar won’t be forgotten in a hurry 🤮), take part in surveys and the ‘Unmasking the appeal’ activity and have a feed. A lucky few also took home prizes from the raffle!
The event began with a deadly didgeridoo performance by Sammy Leone from The Boss Boxing.
Melika from Deadly Choices then spoke about this year’s theme, ‘Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products.’ This covered tobacco and nicotine industries use of dishonest strategies to make their harmful products appealing, especially to young people.
The team went on to share information on the importance of the quit journey and how to identify habits and triggers. This is a deadly first step when starting your quitting journey.
Deadly Kindies staff member La Toya shared her quit journey with Temana from Deadly Choices, yarning about the persistence it took to quit. “Each attempt to quit was a learning experience, and many of us succeed after multiple tries,” she said.
We encourage Mob to take up the challenge this World No Tobacco Day and start your quit journey.
Your local Moreton ATSICHS clinic can offer a variety of support for the entire duration of your quit journey. This includes access to Nicotine Replacement Therapy, a confidential yarn, culturally safe support, Quitline referrals and quit programs.
