On Saturday 12 July, we held our very first NAIDOC Family Fun Day to honour this year’s theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.”
On a wonderful winters’ day at The Mill Waterpark, we gathered to celebrate the achievements of the past and our very bright future ahead. We were excited to see Mob from all generations come together to celebrate culture, past, present and future.
In the busy Elders tent, Glenys spoke of the joy of seeing so many young people wearing their heritage so proudly – a true reflection of this year’s theme.
The Moreton ATSICHS team were out in force and joined by our friends at Birthing In Our Community, Deadly Choices, Deadly Kindies, POWA, Public Health and Staying Deadly.
Meanwhile, jarjum were entertained by the petting zoo and pass the ball inflatable, while Deadly Choices ambassadors, Edrick Lee and Petero Civoniceva enjoyed their time with family, Community and Elders.
Mob well and truly were entertained by the deadly Wakka Wakka Dance Group and Torres Strait Islander dancers, Kutew Zoeru. The Fringe Dwellers kept the good vibes going with live music throughout the day. Bowie Solutions provided the delicious Kup Murri feed, and Coles delivered the snags and fruit that kept everyone well fed.
Stalls had people yarning and moving. The Australian Defence Force and local fire brigade set up to yarn with Mob. The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health were yarning it up to get Community feedback, with giveaways from Deadly Choices, Bunnings and Rebel Sport.
“Thank you to everyone who came out to join us,” said Kristie Watego, Executive Director at Moreton ATSICHS.
“It was deadly to see Mob young and old, gathered from across the region to celebrate our culture and 50 years of NAIDOC,” she added.
“We look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come.”
