Celebrating World Family Doctor Day: The Moreton ATSICHS pod model in action
World Family Doctor Day is a global celebration recognising the vital role of family doctors and primary health care teams in keeping communities healthy. This year, Moreton ATSICHS is proud to highlight our pod model of care – a team-based approach that strengthens continuity, cultural safety and whole-of-family care for our community.
What is the Pod Model?
At Moreton ATSICHS, the pod model brings together a dedicated, multidisciplinary care team for each patient cohort. Rather than seeing different clinicians at every visit, patients are supported by a familiar “pod” that may include GPs, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners, nurses, allied health professionals and administrative staff working closely together.
This model ensures that care is coordinated, consistent and culturally responsive, reflecting our commitment to community-controlled health and holistic wellbeing.
Family doctors are often the first point of contact in the health system, caring for people across their lifespan and supporting entire families. The pod model strengthens this role by:
- Building trusting relationships: Seeing the same care team over time supports stronger therapeutic relationships and improved health outcomes.
- Providing holistic care: Pods consider social, emotional, cultural and physical wellbeing – not just immediate clinical needs.
- Improving access and continuity: Shared knowledge within the pod reduces gaps in care and helps patients feel supported, even when their usual clinician is unavailable.
- Supporting cultural safety: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners play a central role, ensuring care is delivered in a culturally safe and respectful way.
World Family Doctor Day is also an opportunity to recognise the hard work of our GPs and pod teams, who go above and beyond to support community health every day. Working within a pod allows doctors to collaborate more effectively, share responsibility and draw on the strengths of the wider team – helping to reduce burnout and improve sustainability of care.
As we celebrate World Family Doctor Day, Moreton ATSICHS reaffirms its commitment to community-led, culturally strong primary health care. The pod model is one of the ways we are reshaping care to better meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people – now and for generations to come.
